Create Art & Curate Your Home

miss abigial 13

We have a new addition to our family, born September 11, 2015, Miss Abigail Kristine, I am a first time Aunt…… yes, that is so exciting!  I already have her box of crayons ready!

Anxiously awaiting Abby’s arrival, my painting wheels started turning in my head of all the keepsakes I could create for my beautiful niece.  Vintage Pull Toys came to mind, since I love Vintage…….everything Vintage.

About the same time, I was admiring the work of Sheila Landry of Sheila Landry Designs.  Sheila creates beautiful pieces for the scroll saw artist and decorative artist, along with patterns and an inspiring blog.  I reached out to Sheila with my vintage pull toy idea and we began working together, Sheila created the wooden duck pull toy from a drawing I provided (with her tweaking….. a lot of tweaking, insert wink), and shipped it to me.  When it arrived it was just perfect….and I began painting as I envisioned it!

I love the white and yellow traditional toy duck, But the non-traditional ‘funky’ toy duck has its charm too.

Since I wanted the toy duck to show some ‘love’, like a vintage pull toy,  I chose to antique and crackle.  This takes much patience since it is first base coated, then dry brushed, then crackled, then antiqued (the ugly stage), then dry brushed again….then varnished and waxed.

The dry brushing allowed me to have distressed edges without sanding.

I am soooooooo in love with the ‘aging’ process…the below picture in black and white shows it best…look at the neat crackle on the right by the wing….to perfection.

I also added wooden buttons, balls and babbles, hand dyed wool and yarn.

I love the cute tuft of hair on the ducklings….and just look at that awesome aging!

The wooden duck pull toy can be found on Sheila’s site http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com, here.  While your visiting stop by her blog page, so many ideas, always a fun read!  I especially love her recent post about painting on foil!
