Instead of reaching for your next bottle of Kraft BBQ Sauce ~ try your hand at creating your very own blend to ‘jar’, save and share too!

It really is just an assembly of ingredients, ‘a little of this and a little of that‘, all blended together to your own liking.

Do you like a honey blend, a smoke-y blend, a spicy blend or any other combination?…..the flavor is simply adjusted by mixing ‘a little more of this and a little less of that‘!

This recipe ‘jars’ 24 ~ 8oz jars ~ ready made bbq sauce for dipping or cooking.

Once you have tasted your own blend, you will no longer be a bottle baby….simply delish.

The ‘base’ of the recipe (below) is from the Cookbook ‘The Joy of Cooking‘ ~ shown below, a favorite cookbook for sure.

BBQ Sauce

Servings 24 8 oz jars

Ingredients
  

  • 18 cups ketchup (use your favorite brand)
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 7 cups brown sugar (for the sweetness)
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 4 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp chili powder (or to your taste)
  • 1/2 cup hickory smoke (or to your taste)
  • 1 cup worestershire sauce
  • 1 cup mustard (I used honey mustard)
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder (or to your taste)
  • 3 tbsp onion powder (or to your taste)

Instructions
 

  • Mix the garlic powder and onion powder with the mustard and set aside for a moment. (keeps the sauce from becoming lumpy.)
  • Pour and Mix all ingredients, including the mustard blend, into a very large stock pot and boil for 15 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Place into clean 8oz canning jars. Jar with your favorite jarring method. label jar with date for keeping.

My idea of a good quick hamburger-bbq sandwich was simply chili sauce and ground hamburger ~ well, until I tried this Sloppy Joe Recipe…..from ‘The Joy of Cooking‘ Cookbook.

The last ingredient is homemade BBQ sauce ~ it’s a good thing I made 24 8oz jars!

Sloppy Joe BBQ Sandwich

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 lbs hamburger
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour (don't omit, it thickens the sauce)
  • 2 tbsp mustard
  • 1 1/2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup bbq sauce (how about your own!)

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter and saute onions until soft, then add hamburger until brown in a large fry pan.
  • Add sugar and flour, stirring well. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer 30 minutes.
  • Serve on your favorite rolls.
