I’ve learned along the way that housekeeping is not my strong suit, home-keeping yes,….but housekeeping, well, let’s just say it is not my favorite thing to do.

I’m not sure about you but I’ve spent most weekends of my younger days trying to keep up with what I thought was expected, ‘women kept clean homes’ ~ here we were full-time working women trying to keep up with the previous generations stay-at-home housewive’s homes on our weekend time, like it was a competition.

I have used every procrastination tactic to get out of housekeeping….only to have it staring back at me in the face, undone, feeling defeated and discouraged each and every day.

I eventually began to just ignore it all-together, until it was almost embarrassing. How could I possibly have such an un-kept home when I write a ‘Home Style’ Blog….I know funny right?

Let me tell you, this ends here.

The question is ~ How can I have a ‘work week’ and still have a well-kept home with time to spare?

Welp, my Mom has a solution that works.

She ‘breaks’ down her housekeeping routine, by task and by room over several days…..sounds do-able.

My ‘all in one day’ weekend cleaning routine….or lack there-of is over.

Since I live by a Daily Planner (read here)…ps, this needs an update ~ I decided to add ‘housekeeping tasks’ to each daily planner sheet.

Here is how I Designed Each Daily Planner Sheet

  1. Add a ‘housekeeping task list’ to the ‘main’ planner daily sheet (a master copy). Then print this daily sheet, one for each day of a month and add to the planner.’ (see download editable sample here) ~ Note: Dusting & Cleaning just a portion of each room is just one task. Typically, each task takes me less than 20 minutes. An example of a task ~ 1. Fireplace Wall Living Space, 2. Candle Display in Studio, 3. Hutch in Dining Room, and so on.
  2. Next, highlight one ‘task’ on each individual day/page until all the tasks are complete thru the month. I do not highlight any tasks on the weekends. Once the task list is completed, I then give myself 5 free days until I begin the task list again. Repeat.
  3. Vacuum once a week. (we do not have pets or children).
  4. Create a Master List within your Planner of DIY, Dreams and Organizing Projects ~ then choose ‘one project a month’ to accomplish. An Example ~ Sort Through Linens, Clean Oven, Wash Curtains, Change Decor, Clean the Basement, etc.

Design your ‘daily planner sheet’ for your daily routine ~ from your morning routine to scheduled appointments…however your life rolls!

I will tell you that our home has never been cleaner or more organized, and crossing it off each daily to-do list feels like accomplishment!

All it took was a page from my Moms lesson book and little planning for a well kept home.

Thanks Mom.

We now have a clean, organized, well kept, yet lived in home.

Home Sweet, well kept Home.

    With my own life being so ‘unscheduled’, I more or less have to do things when I have time. I have a loose schedule, but that is the best I can do. 🙂 As long as the job gets done – right? 😉 Great blog!

      I like to explain to folks that we (as creative business owners) don’t have more time, but we have flexible time….I love that, makes it nice to schedule and plan even the cleaning! It’s getting done!

    The candle areas are looking good. Such a good idea for this space! I like to do one housekeeping task a day, too. That way I don’t feel so overwhelmed. I used to do all the cleaning on a weekend day…killer task! Soon it will be spring cleaning time. Wash and iron curtains and tablecloths, clean the curio cabinet, etc. But a room at a time. Thank you for your Mom’s housekeeping tips. We can always learn something new.

      I should have done this years ago….I would have saved myself alot of time and had a cleaner home :)….yuk, Spring Cleaning! But…maybe if I break it down, lol! We just may have more time to play Judy!

    Moms know best. I live in a larger home. I have used the weekly cleaning schedule for years. Love your new candle nook! Especially the door, great idea!
