A little Homespun Goodness to start off the New Year….. Sweet Chickens!

Here a cluck, there a cluck, everywhere a cluck cluck.

ya know….I haven’t baked these Cream Cheese Cut-outs in almost 30 years and felt it was time to get out one of my favorite recipes!  Really, how could a favorite wait for 30 years????

Not sure where the recipe came from…it was re-written on a recipe card many moons ago and tucked away…for no other reason than it takes time to make cut-outs~ and the time was now to get it out….being that I purchased a new cookie cutter while away this summer.  A simple sweet chicken (or is it rooster?), that caught my eye while at Yankee Candle!

It is a nice after Christmas project to do…..there is always that down time between Christmas and New Years.

…the cream cheese keeps the cookie softer and makes for a yummy difference, cutting them little thicker too.

I used Betty Crocker White Cookie Icing to create the fun designs.  It is just a hint more sweeter than the cookie!

Giving as a Christmas gift?….just add green and red jimmies or icing!

Cream Cheese Cut-Outs Recipe

Cream together 1 Cup sugar, 1 Cup softened butter and 3oz softened cream cheese until light and fluffy.  Add in 1 tsp vanilla and 1 egg and mix well. 

Then level off 2 an 1/2 Cups of flour (with sifted 1/4 tsp salt) and stir into mixture gradually until combined.

Then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours or overnight.

Roll and Cut into shapes on a floured surface.  Bake at 375 degrees for 7 minutes.  Cool for 1 minute.  When cool, sprinkle with jimmies or icing and Enjoy.

tip:  I added additional flour, the dough can be a little sticky.  I also used parchment paper on my cookie sheets to bake.  Lovin’ the parchment paper.

I thought I had a cow cookie cutter too…..but I did not….or maybe I did and I can’t find it, it’s been 30 years ya know.  anyway….I thought the cast iron cow in the photo added a little humor!

…the cookies would make a nice homespun gift for a friend….just for fun.  All wrapped up with bakers twine, of course, in a cello bag.

How about with a super cute acrylic ‘chicken’ tag tie-on…create one from the ‘Floating Chickens’ free pattern.  Or a simple ‘homespun’ free pattern in Classic Chalk Art style, this would look so cute!

hemmmm, I think I will experiment with the cookie dough for Easter….stay tuned for a classic combo of flavors ….fingers crossed it will be delicious!
