All Things Art & Home

If you have lived in Pennsylvania all your life as I have, especially near ‘Dutch’ Country, then I am sure that you grew up on Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking.

Although my Mom tossed in a Spaghetti Meal once in a while, we were meat and potato people. My Dad was a meat and potatoes kinda guy….as my father-in-law was as well.

Now typically I can make potatoes, carrots and meatloaf without any type of recipe, instructions, direction or guidance….but every once in a while I like to discover new ways to make good ‘home cooking’ better. Especially when finding a new cookbook available from a favorite Restaurant in Lancaster, Pa, ‘Dutch Country‘.

If you like basic Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking, then you will enjoy Katie’s Kitchen Cookbook. Tastes like home to me.

And if you are in Lancaster County PA, in Ronks, stop by their Restaurant, ‘Katie’s Kitchen‘, you will not leave hungry. Oh…and be sure to try the Peanut Butter Schmear and Bread Rolls, you will thank me later. The recipe is also in the book.

Another favorite from the book, is Pork Roast. Pork is not a favorite of mine ~ Well, until I tried Katie’s made with brown sugar and applesauce. It is delicious.

The potatoes and carrots shown were both made using the recipes from Katie’s Kitchen recipe book.

As for the meatloaf, I created a recipe using a local product made about a mile from our home, at Wos-Wit, Grouse Hunt Farms Inc. They have so many delicious products but I love their Tomato Preserves and their Bacon Dressing is the best! You can find Wos-Wit on-line here.

If you are in the Tamaqua PA area during the summer months, they have a farmer’s market stand with Wos-Wit products and fresh garden vegetables. Aside of the market there is an Eatery called ‘Rough Cut‘, it has smoked pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, hand cut fries and yummy coleslaw. The Eatery overlooks a zinnia garden and farm land….such a pretty setting.

When I make one meatloaf, I make two, one for freezing. Enjoy the recipe below using Wos-Wit Tomato Preserves.

Tomato Preserve Meatloaf

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds ground hamburger (I like 85/15)
  • 2 eggs slightly beaten
  • plain breadcrumbs, about a cup
  • 13 oz Wos-Wit Tomato Preserves

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients, mix well.
  2. Form into 2 equal loafs and place in a baking or casserole pan(s).
  3. Bake at 350 for approximately 45 minutes, depending on your oven.
  4. Enjoy one this evening, freeze the other for a quick ready meal or meatloaf sandwiches!

And as always a Sunday Dinner is not complete without a sweet ending! I made a simple 9 x 13 chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, but added a secret surprise between the cake and icing layers.

Simply bake your favorite brownie or cake recipe then while it is still warm~out of the oven layer your favorite candybar on-top of the warm cake, let the candybar melt a little, then spread with a spatula. I used peppermint patties for this recipe….but Milky Ways would be yummy too!

Then once cooled, icing as usual and serve!

Are you feeling a little Pennsylvania Dutch? Comfort Food that feels like Home!

Enjoy!

Will try the restaurant when next in the Lancaster area. Going to be in that area in the beginning of June. Planning a trip to the Hometown farmer’s market soon, too, so will try the preserves. Looking forward to painting the first page of the Christmas book!

    1. Happy Painting! ….happy to out and about again 🙂enjoy!

We have passed the restaurant many times, but never tried it. Will have to try it sometime when we get in the area again. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Now with some freedom this would be a nice dining time together! Hope to plan soon!
